Communicating Astronomy with the Public

Public communication of astronomy provides an important link between the scientific astronomical community and society, giving visibility to scientific success stories and supporting both formal and informal science education. While the principal task of an astronomer is to further our knowledge of the Universe, disseminating this new information to a wider audience than the scientific community is becoming increasingly important. This is the main task of public astronomy communication — to bring astronomy to society. The CAPjournal is a free peer-reviewed journal for astronomy communicators, online and in print.

Journal of Research in Science Teaching

Journal of Research in Science Teaching (JRST) focus on studies in which deep, disciplinary understanding of science provides the foundation for the work, and where student learning outcomes are featured. Manuscripts might focus on instructional design, student leadership, learning technologies, experiential activities, interdisciplinary projects, and so on. But in every case, we are interested in evidence-based research that speaks directly to the details of disciplinary understanding that derives, for example, from studying task performances and artifacts, or from analyses of interviews and other direct sources of data, as opposed to using test-taking or grading performance as surrogates for student learning.

  1. This is a useful list.

One additional journal with very regular coverage is International J. of Science Education, Part B: Communication and Public Engagement.

Will you be looking through journals that do regularly publish science comm research, though not exclusively? I’m thinking of PLOS One, PNAS, ST&HV, Social Studies of Science, Science as Culture, etc. And, of course, many other journals publish an occasional article, such as Climatic Change or Educational Psychologist or….the list is very long.

    1. Thank you for your suggestions, Bruce. We are happy to include as many relevant articles as possible and will include any that we come across. In the meantime, if you have any articles that would be especially useful to science communicators or outreach professionals and we have missed them, please tweet us and we will include it.
