Theatre of good intentions: challenges and hopes for theatre and social change

Elliot Leffler (Book reviewer)

Theatre of good intentions: challenges and hopes for theatre and social change, by Dani Snyder-Young, Basingstoke, Palgrave Macmillan, 2013, 176 pp., ISBN 978-1-137- 29302-2

Applied Theatre literature often interrogates projects that have been deemed ‘successful’. Implicitly, these studies suggest that the scholars and practitioners of this field can best learn about how Applied Theatre works by scrutinising success. Dani Snyder-Young directly challenges this trend with her new book, Theatre of Good Intentions. Influenced by scholars like James Thompson, Sonja Kuftinec and S. Jamil Ahmed, Snyder-Young argues that we must interrogate the limits of Applied Theatre with sobriety and rigour in order to better understand and wield its potential power.
